I highly recommend this book! The writer tells the story of Flame and his owner in his own narrative style which draws the reader in. You cannot help but become involved in the future of Flame, as well as the owner. It is also a story of the dedication and responsibilities of Humane Law Officers. I'm sure many people are not aware of the job they do and the difficulties they face in trying to insure that all animals are treated humanely. The short stories about other animal cases at the end are a bonus to this book. I'm sure the reader won't be disappointed with any of it!Product details

Flame The Horse That Refused to Die Bill Reilly 9781499008876 Books Reviews
I had no idea what a peace officer does working for the ASPCA until I read this book. The author takes the reader with him on his cases It is touching and gritty at the same time.. If you are an animal lover, I strongly recommend this book.
Amazingly written. Like the old saying goes " You can't judge a book by its cover ". This story is exactly that. What starts out as trying to help a horse becomes helping a man that just needed someone to care. True dedication for the love of animals and the people behind an amazing rescue. GREAT JOB!!
A real page turner, filled with the gritty reality of what the animals, as well as the dedicated men and women trying to save them, go through. The physical and mental toughness of the job palpable; the frustration of the "lows" and the elation at the rescues and victories -- it makes you glad for the animals and the people who save them. While reading, you get the feeling that the author is sitting in your living room just telling the story to a friend, which makes it an easy read. Highly recommended for any animal lover.
The story of Flame compassionately shows the great lengths that SPCA Officers will go to protect animals and many times their owners. The author describes Flame as a survivor; he was because he had incredibly caring people come to his rescue. As most of us have experienced, often in our lives things never go the way we expect, such is the case with Flame. Many people would have given up on helping Flame because of the obstacles that never seem to stop coming. The author and his colleagues are to be commended for their dedication to duty which went way beyond what was required. One of the mini-stories toward the end of the book involves a Chihuahua which this reader found hilarious.
Several years ago my dog got arrested. It seemed we had recently moved into a town that had a strict leash law and I paid $50 plus court costs to discover this regulation. As you might expect I had a very low opinion of "Dog Catchers" as a result of my experience.
Until reading the book "Flame - The horse that refused to die" I had no idea how dedicated these individuals are, nor the scope of their responsibilities. Mr. Reilly tells a compelling story of the day to day difficulties facing those who work to protect our precious pets, and in doing so often expose themselves to unforeseen dangers.
The fact that Flame is alive and well is directly attributable to the actions of Mr. Reilly and that is something he has every right to be very proud of.
I'm not going to spoil the story for you, but if you have any compassion for the 4-legged critters that touch our days everyday then be sure to pick up this fine book.;
I am not and avid book reade,r and choose my reading usually by subject matter. The title of Mr. Reilly's book caught my attention but that was only the start. After only a few pages I knew this was a "read until finish" situation due to the way it was written by the author and the immediate heart tug to know how this was going to play out.
The attention to detail and the explanation of the duties of a police officer along with the legal limitations involved with animal rescue was an education for me.
Every horse lover, or should I say every animal lover, has to read this book to see the level of dedication that went into the rescue process, and I know that probably the majority of the time spent was Pro Bono, which is another tribute to volunteers like Mr. Reilly..
"Flame" is a must read for animal lovers. The author, Bill Reilly, not only engrosses you in the lives of the animals but also in the lives of the owners and staff at the SPCA as well. I was amazed to learn about the operation of the SPCA and the involvement of the staff and Humane Law Officer volunteers. Bill and other volunteers unselfishly give of their time and talents to help animals and humans where in many cases the results would have been catastrophic had they not intervened. Kudos to you Bill for making a difference and giving us a wonderful human interest story to read. Best wishes!! Linda R
